True Grit is UMBC`s mascot. True Grit appears in two forms: a statue in front of the Retriever Activities Center of a Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and a costumed mascot, an anthropomorphized Chesapeake Bay Retriever. This last point is typically visible in the sportswear he is visiting; It`s mostly basketball or lacrosse. All faculties and staff authorized to visit campus this fall must complete an online health and safety training module before travelling to campus. Those who have not yet done so should visit blackboard.umbc.edu and click on “Organizations”, then on “Back to Campus” to access the training. If you have difficulty accessing the training module, please contact covid19@umbc.edu. The Retriever mascot is a chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Maryland state dog. There is a statue of a retriever known as the True Grit, which stands in front of the Retriever Activities Center (RAC). UMBC`s costumed mascot is both known as True Grit and fever. UMBC also had a live mascot called Campus Sam. Today, there is a living mascot called Gritty.
In 2007, True revealed that he had a sister, Trudy Grit, at the Pep Volleyball Rally. It was also used as a mascot. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is Maryland`s state dog and, for weeks after its inception in 1966, the UMBC mascot. [13] In the late 1990s, the costumed mascot was alternately called “Fever the Retriever”. The university also had a living mascot on which rests the statue of True Grit, called Campus Sam. [14] In early fall 2008, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy was selected as the new mascot. He participates in many sporting events and an online survey was conducted on the Retriever Activities Center website to choose his name, which was eventually decided as “Gritty”. The costumed mascot has been quite consistent over the years, with one notable exception.
At the convocation at the beginning of the academic year 2002-2003, a new mascot costume was revealed, which was clearly different from the previous costume. This mascot was active for the rest of the school year, but after this year a familiar mascot returned – the new costume looked like the first edition with a slightly darker brown coat. Levi Houapeu, the star of the team`s forward in 2010, was the fifth pick in the third round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union. He is the first UMBC player to be relegated to MLS. . . .
